Asteria, the International Association of Myth Criticism, is a non-profit cultural organisation based in the Faculty of Philology at the Complutense University of Madrid. Its objective is to promote, encourage, and support the study of Myth Criticism.
In collaboration with the Retiro Municipal Council, it announces the Sixth Asteria Artistic Creation and Mythology Contest.
THE EXHIBITION
During the Sixth Asteria Artistic Creation and Mythology Contest, works inspired by mythology will be exhibited.
Mythology is understood as stories related to gods and goddesses or benevolent and malevolent spirits, as well as heroes and heroines related to these divinities, from Antiquity (Hera, Poseidon, Antigone, Oedipus), the Middle Ages (Freya, King Arthur, Iseult, Tristan) and the Modern Age (Faust, Don Juan, Dracula).
The exhibition will take place from June 4 to 30, 2025, in the Maruja Mallo exhibition hall located in Madrid, at Plaza Daoiz y Velarde number 2, and can be visited from Monday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
CONTEST RULES
The Sixth Asteria Artistic Creation and Mythology Contest is governed by the following rules:
TARGET AUDIENCE
Any university student from the Community of Madrid may participate in this call for proposals.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ARTWORK
The artworks must be original and created using permanent materials. In the case of photographs and prints, the series or copy number must be explicitly indicated.
The artworks must not exceed 60 cm in any of their dimensions. Style and technique are free.
From the works received across the various disciplines (painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, illustration, printmaking, video art, etc.), 40 will be selected for exhibition.
REQUIREMENTS AND SUBMISSION DEADLINE
Contestants must send the duly completed registration form and a high-resolution photograph of the artwork (for selection purposes) to this email address before May 15th:

The selected artworks must be delivered in person on June 3, 2025, to the Maruja Mallo exhibition hall, Plaza Daoiz y Velarde, number 2, Madrid, between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
SELECTION AND AWARDS
Once the deadline for receiving documentation has passed, the Jury (comprised of individuals of recognized prestige in the artistic and cultural world) will meet to select the works that will form the collective exhibition and to propose the award winners.
The first prize will consist of €300.
Two runner-up prizes will be awarded.
The Jury’s decision will be announced publicly on June 4, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. during the opening of the exhibition.
The winning artwork and the right to reproduce it freely will become the property of Asteria, the International Association of Myth Criticism.
In addition, a catalog with ISBN for the event will be published, featuring the winning work, the runner-up prizes, and the works selected for the exhibition.
ANNOUCEMENTS AND REMOVAL OF ARTWORK
The resolution of this call for proposals will be notified to the interested parties and made public on the Association’s website and social media:

Once the exhibition has ended, the exhibited and non-awarded artworks must be collected on June 30th from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. After the established deadline for the return of non-awarded artworks, if any remain uncollected, it will be understood that the author has voluntarily renounced ownership. The artwork will immediately become the property of the Association, which may decide its fate as it deems appropriate, including its sale and/or destruction.
ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES
Participation in this contest implies full acceptance of all its rules and the decisions made by the Jury by the participants.
It also implies authorisation to exhibit the artworks in the exhibition, not to dispose of them until its conclusion, and to allow their display. Likewise, it implies the absolute and indefinite transfer of the corresponding reproduction rights, in paper or electronic format.
This authorisation applies, in particular, to the awarded work, which is considered bequeathed by the author to the Association without any restriction and will be allocated to the Association’s collection, which may use it for the academic purposes it deems appropriate.
The submitted works must be free of third-party rights, with Asteria being held harmless from any liability in the event of litigation or dispute arising therefrom.
The Organisation will exercise the utmost care in handling the received artworks but will not be responsible for any loss, theft, breakage, or damage to the artwork that may arise from transport or unforeseen accidents. The artist assumes all responsibility for the deterioration, fracture, or destruction of their work when the material used and its execution do not present sufficient consistency and safety conditions for its transfer, handling, and installation.
